What's Hitchin' — Labor Day Weekend
Rodeos, cow horses, Saturday clinics, and a little extra time outside. Here's your Colorado and Wyoming Labor Day shortlist.
Hey riders,
We're landing in your inbox a day late this week, but there's still plenty ahead. Durango has a Friday-night rodeo, Rock Springs has racing and a pole bending clinic, and Labor Day brings the Ouray County Rodeo in Ridgway.
Tonight: Durango
- Four Corners Motorcycle Rally Rodeo — Friday, September 4 at La Plata County Fairgrounds in Durango, CO. Gates open at 5 p.m., with the rodeo at 6:30 p.m. True Western Roundup lists tickets online or at the gate.
Make a weekend of it
- Sweetwater Downs Horse Racing — Saturday and Sunday, September 5–6, at 1 p.m. both days, at the Sweetwater Events Complex grandstands in Rock Springs, WY. Admission is $6, including the racing program and parking; kids under 12 are free.
- Colorado State Fair Cow Horse Show — September 4–7 in Pueblo, CO. The fair's tentative schedule has rein work Saturday and cow horse classes Sunday and Monday. Daily start times aren't listed in that schedule; check the horse show office's latest information before heading over.
- Wyoming State Finals Mounted Shooting — September 5–7 at Niobrara County Fairgrounds in Lusk, WY. Saturday's Rawhide Shoot starts at noon, followed by the main match Sunday at 10 a.m. and final stages Monday at 9 a.m., weather permitting. The organizer has replaced the Guns, Cans & Cattle jackpot with a two-stage shoot. Online registration is closed; contact the club about any remaining entry options.
Saturday clinics
- Cow Clinic with Nate Bowers — September 5, 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m., at Two Spruce Farm in Berthoud, CO. Practice tracking, driving, and sorting cattle. The $185 fee includes cattle; riders are limited and preregistration is required. Confirm a space before hauling.
- Pluemer Pole Bending Clinic — September 5 in the Sweetwater Events Complex Indoor Arena in Rock Springs, WY. Instruction and drills with Leia Pluemer. The venue confirms the date and arena but doesn't post a start time or fee; contact the organizer first.
Sunday & Labor Day
- Don King Days — September 6–7 at Big Horn Equestrian Center near Big Horn, WY, with polo, steer roping, and bronc riding. Check the timing before you go: Big Horn Polo Club lists its Sunday and Monday games at 10 a.m., earlier than the tourism page's general 11 a.m. event start. Use the club's current schedule for polo.
- Ouray County Rodeo — Monday, September 7 at noon in Ridgway, CO. The rodeo association's linked 2026 ticket page confirms the Labor Day performance. Check the organizer's rodeo page for tickets and updates.
Put next Saturday on the calendar
- Wild West EquiFest — September 12, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., in the Goshen County Fairgrounds indoor pavilion in Torrington, WY. Free admission, with horse demonstrations, performances, vendors, children's activities, and a live auction supporting Operation Remount.
